The original model of this instrument is categorized as a euphonium. However, manufacturers didn’t consistently define the difference between euphoniums and baritone horns, so this instrument can likely be considered either a euphonium or baritone horn.
The 24-I Connstellation Euphonium is described on pages 115 and 117 of the 1968 “Conn Product Manual”. Here is how the Conn company described the 24-I:
The 24-I and 25-I euphoniums are the newest additions to the well known Conn euphonium line, and have been acclaimed by brasswind artists as the finest euphoniums created. These four-valve models are available with detachable bell front (Model 24-I) or detachable bell up (Model 25-I). Both bells may be purchased with one model, for they are interchangeable.
These instruments were designed to produce a big full, dark traditional euphonium sound, and yet their freeblowing characteristics make it possible to play longer passages with much less effort than any competitive model.
The 24-I and 25-I were designed to use a larger mouthpiece, and an adapter is furnished should the performer desire to use a standard baritone or trombone mouthpiece.
There are two special tuning slides on these euphoniums . . . a fourth valve tuning slide for use in normal range and a tuning slide to extend the range of the instrument to a Flat E. Extra bracing in tuning slide area provides greater strength and stability. A fourth valve is a feature for use in alternate fingerings and added range. The mouthpipe is specially located for comfortable holding. Rolled flanges on all outer tuning slides greatly improve appearance and make it much easier to remove and return slides to proper tuning positions.
Undercutting gives all tuning slides a better bearing surface and makes tuning much easier and more accurate. A special tuning device on the main tuning slide makes it possible to tune each note to your personal satisfaction. Regular length valves are used on these models. Bell size: 24-I ... 11 inches, 25-I ... 11¾ inches. (Page 115)
