Bell has a faded label with the handwritten note: “English Sackbut in B-flat originated in 14th century Italy”. This note may be inaccurate.
The sackbut is an early form of the trombone. This item is the bell section and it would have had a slide, like a trombone. This sackbut would have been played over-the-shoulder, with the bell pointing backwards or back-and-upwards. This instrument was likely created by the Conn company for their instrument museum, like other reproduction brass instruments in our collection, but more research is needed.
